Health Evaluation of the Rural and Urban Area by the Method of Todai Health Index (THI)


Abstract
In order to evaluate and compare the psychosomatic and health status of rural people and urbanites in Korea, health questionaire by Todai Health Index (THI) for 1,028 persons was analyzed.
The data has been collected during the period from May 22, 1980 to the end of Novem
ber, 1980 by random sampling and statistically compared. The results obtained were summarized as follows:
1. The psychosomatic symptoms which rural people and urbanites complained most frequently were multiple subjective symptom, mental irritability, irregular life and lie scale in order.
2. The response of psychic complaints was much higher in urban area than in rural area. Rural people showed relatively the higher score for somatic complaints than psychic complaints.
3. Both the female and the male group in urban area showed higher score for eye and skin, lie scale, mental irritability, depression, nervousness and irregular life than those in rural area; in particular, there were remarkable differences in the scores of mental
irritability of male group and depression of female group.
4. In-the urban male group, the older the age groups in the higher the score of psychic complaints such as lie scale, mental irritability, depression, agressiveness and nervousness. Higher score of mental irritability was noted among middle aged people.
5. The response of psychosomatic complaints especially in the score of respiratory and digestive system was higher in rural male group over 50 years of age.
6. There was more increasing tendency in the response of psychic complaints in unmarried group than in married group. The higher scores for multiple subjective symptom, respiratory system, depression, agressiveness, nervousness and irregular life were noted
among unmarried females.
